It’s official! The Lehigh GreenFund will now be known as the Sustainable Initiative Grant. The Lehigh Sustainability Council (LSC) voted over the summer to change the name to differentiate the grant among other “green” loans/funds throughout campus, such as the Green Revolving Loan. The committee decided to include the word grant to emphasize that funding is provided (not loaned) to students, faculty, and staff for sustainability projects on campus. Overall, the goal of the Sustainable Initiative Grant is to advance sustainability on the Lehigh campus through funding collaborative learning projects and the new name better reflects the mission and goal.
The most recent Sustainable Initiative Grant was awarded to Jordan Wolman ‘21 and Glenn Strause, Manager of Surplus Property ‘ASA’s Attic,’ Courier Services, Warehousing and Logistics for a campus-wide electronic recycling/waste reduction program. The goal of this program is to provide recycling for electronic waste campus-wide and divert as much as possible from going into the trash.
Other recent Sustainable Initiative Grants include:
-
LU Beekeeping Club Beecam: grant funded the purchase and installation of an outdoor live-feed camera for the club beehives at Iacocca.
-
Lehigh Heritage Park: grant funded an undergraduate Technical Entrepreneurship class to develop Lehigh-owned land into a publicly accessible park and education center.
-
Eco House Community Garden: grant funded materials, seeds, and starter plants to create a organic, raised bed community garden at the Eco House.
-
Bottle Filling Challenge: grant funded a water bottle filling station at the Centennial School to help reduce the number of water bottles used by teachers and students.
