Real Food, Real Change

After class on a Friday morning in early February, sophomore Aleksander Gulkewicz ’20 pulls up a seat in Lower Cort at the University Center and starts entering dining hall invoices into his computer. Bagels, English muffins and multigrain rolls from a bakery. Eggroll wrappers, green curry paste and Nutella from a specialty foods company. He fills a spreadsheet with more details—vendor names, product codes and food descriptions. Later, he’ll analyze whether the items meet national “Real” Food Standards and check if the vendors have had any labor or safety and health violations.  Read More...

Campus Sustainability Plan 2020: Transportation & Engagement

In support of the Campus Sustainability Plan 2020 goals of increasing engagement and sustainable transportation options, Lehigh has partnered with LANTA. Another Successful Move Out Collection Drive and Great Southside Sale

At the end of the spring semester, thousands of American college students move out of university housing and leave items they cannot or do not want to take with them.  As a result, many college communities find dumpsters overflowed and neighborhood sidewalks filled with bags and boxes of usable, but unwanted items. Lehigh’s annual Move Out Collection Drive in May and Great Southside Sale on June 2 helped combat this issue. Read More...

Each of the five funded projects served to advance sustainability on campus, had a clearly defined, measurable outcome, incorporated publicity, and included education and outreach.   Read More...

Lehigh Hits 1 Million Plastic Bottles Eliminated

Lehigh has diverted over 1 million plastic water bottles through the water refill stations across campus! Each semester, the Eco-Reps check all the stations and make note of how many bottles have been refilled on each machine.  Lehigh began installing the stations in 2014.  Since then, more than 40 have been installed across campus and more are expected to be implemented in the future! For a complete map of the water refill stations, click here.

Installation of Additional Big Belly Bins This Summer

Facilities Services will be installing 25 additional sets of Big Belly solar compacting trash and recycling bins across campus this summer. The bins have an automatic compactor inside allowing each bin to hold more than regular bins.  When the bins are full, they transmit a wireless signal to the custodial team, letting them know it is time to pick up. All the power needed for the bins to communicate wirelessly comes from the solar panels on top of each bin! These bins will be in addition to the two sets that were installed in Farrington Square last summer.

Upcoming SustainabLEHIGH Prelusion Trip

In August, the Office of Sustainability will be leading a PreLUsion program called SustainabLEHIGH for the eighth straight year. This three-day trip introduces incoming first-year students to all facets of sustainability. Students explore the Lehigh Valley through biking, canoeing, visiting a local farm, eating organic meals, and camping on an island.  Students are able to make connections with campus leaders and sustainability champions.
