Lehigh Sustainability Council Update: Apply for the Sustainable Initiative Grant!

You are here

Do you have an idea that will help Lehigh transform into a more sustainable campus, but do not have the resources to get it up and running? The Sustainable Initiative Grant may be for you!

The Sustainable Initiative Grant provides financial resources to members of the Lehigh community who want to pilot innovative and scalable ideas to create a greener, more sustainable campus. One-time grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded to students, faculty, and staff to facilitate green pilot projects.

The most recent Sustainable Initiative Grant was awarded to Evan Mehok ‘19 for the Southside Story Garden. Inspired by the persisting divide between the Lehigh campus community and the Southside Bethlehem community, the garden is home to a collection of stories from individuals both on campus and in the local neighborhoods. The Southside Story Garden is an effort to bring the two communities closer together.

The Sustainable Initiative Grant has funded:

  • The LU Beekeeping Club Beecam: The grant funded the purchase and installation of an outdoor live-feed camera for the club beehives at Iacocca.
  • The Lehigh Heritage Park: The undergraduate Technical Entrepreneurship class developed Lehigh-owned land into a publicly accessible park and education center.

  • The Eco-House Community Garden: The grant funded materials, seeds, and starter plants to create an organic, raised bed community garden at the Eco-House.

  • Bottle Filling Challenge: The grant funded a water bottle filling station at the Centennial School to help reduce the number of water bottles used by teachers and students.
