Improving Walkability and the South Side Experience Through New Urban Design

How can we develop and design urban spaces to build community and increase quality of life? Campus Sustainability Plan 2020: Waste, Green Labs, Eco-Reps Program

Lehigh’s Campus Sustainability Plan 2020 was formally released to campus in January 2017.  Since the Campus Sustainability Plan 2020 was adopted, Lehigh has made great progress toward several of its goals.  In this article, we highlight key progress toward our goals in the areas of waste - through the creation of a waste management plan, green labs - through the development of a pilot program in STEPS, and through our student peer-to-peer program known as Eco-Reps. S.T.A.R. Academy 2017

During the months of June and July, Lehigh University hosts the annual S.T.A.R. (Students That Are Ready) Academy. The S.T.A.R. Academy is a series of three, one week long free camps in which rising 10th and 11th graders from economically challenged homes in the Bethlehem area school district can learn more about college life. The program has been running for over 20 years and it is currently being led by Dr. Sarah Stanlick, the director of the Center for Community Engagement and a professor within the Department of Sociology.   Read More...


Beekeeping Club Receives $1,800 GreenFund Grant

Lehigh University's Beekeeping Club was recently awarded an $1,800 GreenFund grant to fund the purchase of an outdoor wildlife video camera for live streaming capabilities of a beehive on Lehigh’s Mountaintop campus.  Read More...


Installation of Solar Powered Compacting Trash and Recycling Bins in Farrington Square

Facilities Services & Campus Planning recently installed two sets of Big Belly solar compacting trash and recycling bins in Farrington Square.  When the bins are full, they transmit a wireless signal to the custodial team, letting them know it is time to pick up.  All the power needed for the Big Belly bins to compact the trash and recycling as well as communicate wirelessly comes from the solar panels on top of each bin!
