The Lehigh Sustainable Office Program (SOP) is a voluntary, self-guided program designed for faculty and staff to take the lead on promoting sustainable practices in the workplace and identify opportunities for innovation and implement sustainable change. Faculty and staff can reduce their environmental footprint, be responsible stewards of university’s resources, contribute to Lehigh’s sustainability goals and commitments, and build a campus community for the 21st Century.
The Sustainable Office Program is highlighted in Lehigh’s Sustainability Strategic Plan 2030 under the Culture and Engagement focus area with the goal: "Expand the Sustainable Office Program to reach 70% of full-time faculty and staff by 2024, 85% by 2026 and 100% by 2030.”
Following the release of the 2030 Plan, the Office of Sustainability restructured the program to align with the goals in the plan. Each of the 2030 Plan’s six focus areas are represented throughout the Sustainable Office Program process, with opportunities for sustainable innovation in each area.
In addition to the recent restructuring, the Sustainable Office Program team has created a Home Workspace Sustainability Challenge as many employees have worked remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic (no registration required). With the recent finalization of Lehigh’s Staff Flexplace Policy and a Staff Remote Work Policy expected to be released later this summer, there is indication of flexplace work in the post-pandemic era. This sustainability challenge is designed as a casual way for faculty and staff to incorporate sustainable practices into their home workspace.
