This past August, Lehigh Sustainability Council held a retreat for members to discuss and redefine LSC’s mission and objectives. LSC’s new official mission statement is to promote sustainability throughout Lehigh. The Council will build awareness, understanding, and a culture of sustainability on campus. LSC’s main objective is to promote university-wide sustainability initiatives with a goal of improving and extending current programs or initiating new practices. Below are additional specific objectives that LSC is committed to:
-
LSC serves as a structure for exchange of information and communication among stems and departments
-
LSC reviews campus practices that may prohibit or hinder progress on achieving sustainability goals and will provide recommendations to Sustainability Officer and other decision makers for improvements
-
LSC fosters dialogue, supports the advancement of goals identified in the Sustainability Plan, assists with reviewing sustainability progress, and provides a venue for campus organizations, units and groups to work collaboratively to advance sustainability principles throughout campus
-
LSC provides funds for piloting ideas that improve sustainability on campus; Sponsors events, speakers to generate sustainability culture
In addition to these redefined objectives, the committee also will identify a one-year action plan on an annual basis. LSC plays an important role in the implementation of the Campus Sustainability Plan 2020 by leveraging its subcommittees and programs to ensure cross-collaboration among all campus groups.
